Natural Health Girl's Newsletter, How to Avoid Winter Illnesses... October 19, 2009 |
My daughter and I just got back from a great weekend staying with friends where we celebrated their daughter's 10th birthday. The weekend festivities for us girls involved creating henna skin art on our hands and feet, making beaded bracelets, playing games and of course eating dessert! However, amidst all this great fun, there was a downside. Immediately upon arriving at the party I noticed among the children and adults several sniffley noses, one raspy, croaky voice and several with coughs. "Oh no!" I thought to myself. I quickly realized we were in the midst of some sick party goers. Up to this point, my family had done well staying away from anyone with a cold or flu bug. However, generally no matter how hard you try, as winter sets in, you are going to come in contact with sick people. Good thing I had packed vitamin D in our suitcase, so my daughter and I could raise our protection from getting sick. Just two weeks ago our geographic area was hit with a cold spell that made us all think it was January instead of October. Temperatures below and around 30 degrees lasted for about a week. Since I knew my family wasn't spending quality time outside getting fresh air and much needed sunshine, I broke out the vitamin D. At this point, I could no longer deny that summer was gone, and I knew my family had to start protecting and supporting our immune systems against all the cold and flu "crud" that would rear it's ugly head. Reports I'm hearing from friends and family are that many areas are suffering with a lot of illness already, so I thought it was important to address this issue quickly. Have you ever wondered why there is a drastic rise in illness when the weather changes? Why is winter the cold and flu season? Is there anything you can do to guard your health when all these illnesses are circulating around? Of course, there are a ton of natural preventative measures you can take to build your immune system and protect your health. However, the one I'm addressing this week is the connection between lack of sun, vitamin D and illness. To find the answers to the questions above, to learn why many natural health practioners and medical doctors now recommend supplementation with vitamin D, to give you insights into the benefits of vitamin D, and how it can help you stay well this cold and flu season, check out my following articles.
