How to Cure Bedwetting with These Simple Steps

photo of girl sleeping

Are you stressed with your child's habitual bedwetting?

Would you like to know how to cure bedwetting so you can help your child move past this problem and on to greater confidence?

Bedwetting is quite common in early childhood and often by age five most children have overcome it. However, some children have trouble with bedwetting past the age of five all the way up to their teenage years.

For children, wetting the bed at night can be a source of anxiety, frustration, depression, anger, embarrassment and a lack of self-esteem, especially for older children.

It's important for parents to acknowledge such feelings and help their child realize that they are not bad or at fault for the situation.

Like you, your child may be wondering why they're having bedwetting issues.

Here are some possible causes of bedwetting:

  • Very sound sleeping
  • Drinking to much liquid too close to bedtime
  • Food allergies
  • Stress
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Psychological troubles
  • Emotional upset, such as fear
  • Dreaming about going to the bathroom
  • Small bladder
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Candida yeast infection
  • Diabetes
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Kidney or bladder weakness
  • Other underlying health issue

With all of these possible causes where should a parent start?

There are some very easy, natural steps you can take, so try not to be overwhelmed or alarmed with all the possible causes. Take a step by step approach and consider how to cure bedwetting with diet, drink, vitamins, minerals, herbs, homeopathics and emotional and psychological support.

Diet

First, address your child's diet. Make sure your child is getting a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Buy as much organic food as you can, as pesticides and herbicides on non-organic foods are poisons which cause all sorts of health problems. Children are especially susceptible to toxins because of their smaller body size and weight.

Avoid white sugar, fake sugars like aspartame, food additives and perservatives like monosodium glutamate (aka MSG), synthetic food colorings, junk food, soda drinks and other carbonated drinks, white flour and most dairy. Cow's milk is a common food allergen, and contributes to the formation of mucus and other glandular issues in the body.

It may also benefit to cut back on consumption of grains, especially highly processed grains. Gluten in some grains is a known food alergen. Also, too many grains in the diet can contribute to an over acid condition in the body and candida yeast infection. Both of these conditions can weaken the bladder and the kidneys and cause other health issues.

If you feed your child grains, choose a high quality organic grain, such as cooked steel cut oats. A good rule of thumb when wondering about the nutritional quality of a food is to remember to eat food as close to its natural state as possible. If it has been refined too much, it no longer has the nutrients present for your body to utilize it.

A quality protein snack before bedtime can help balance blood sugar levels which affects sleep and bladder control. A good nighttime snack might include nuts, such as peanut butter or meat like turkey or beef.

Drinks

Also, withhold consumption of drinks for no later than 30 minutes before bedtime if not one hour before bedtime.

Beneficial drinks for supporting the bladder and kidneys are pure unsweetened cranberry juice and certain teas. Cranberry helps prevent bacteria from infecting the bladder and the urinary tract. It is also a good source of vitamin C.

Some children may not like the taste of unsweetened cranberry juice, so dilute it with water, tea or a small amount of another quality juice.

Parsley and corn silk are good teas for treating bedwetting. Parsley helps support the bladder, kidneys and liver. Cornsilk like parsley also helps support the bladder and kidneys. It is a diuretic that opens the urinary tract and removes mucus from the urine.

Vitamins and Minerals

Consider a quality vitamin and mineral supplement to balance your child's nutrient reserves.

Magnesium deficiency is also a common culprit in bedwetting. Magnesium and calcium work together in the body, so it is important to get a supplement that is synergistically balanced with both.

Other vitamins known to curb bedwetting are B vitamins, especially B2.

Herbs

Herbs are natural foods that have supportive, cleansing and building benefits for our bodies.

Great ways to administer herbs to children is through cooking, teas, tinctures and pastes. To make a paste, grind herbs and mix with a small amount of organic raw honey. For teas, add herbs to a tea strainer and steep in hot water.

Some herbs that are beneficial for treating bedwetting include:

  • Kava kava is a diuretic and antiseptic that helps with anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress and urinary tract infections.

  • Juniper berries are a diuretic that helps regulate blood sugar, relieves inflammation and helps with bladder and kidney problems.

  • Uva Ursi is a diuretic that supports the bladder, kidneys, spleen, liver and pancreas. It also helps strengthen the sphincter muscle of the bladder.

Homepathics

Homeopathics are another form of holistic medicine which stimulate the body's natural ability to heal and balance itself. There are many good homeopathics for bedwetting.

Emotional and Psychological Well-being

If you know your child is experiencing emotional or psychological upsets, recognize that this too can be a major contributor to bedwetting. Feelings of fear are strong emotions associated with bedwetting.

If you are unsure of your child's emotional and psychological well-being, take some time to tap into your child one on one. This will better assist you in knowing how to cure bedwetting with your child.

Either way, let your child know you are there for them. Schedule some fun time on a regular basis.

Other Underlying Health Issues

If these methods from How to Cure Bedwetting do not improve or cure your child's bedwetting situation, you may want to seek further assistance from a health care professional to rule out other underlying health issues.
